Brake Repair Spring Grove IL | Mike's Auto Works
Squeaking, grinding, a soft pedal? Do not wait on brakes. We have handled brake repair in Spring Grove since 1960, from pads and rotors to calipers, fluid flushes, ABS work, and full rebuilds. Every job carries a 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty.
The One Repair Worth Never Putting Off
Brakes are the system where waiting actually costs lives. Pads wear down over tens of thousands of miles, and most people don't notice until the squealer starts, the little metal tab that scrapes the rotor on purpose to warn you. Once you hear it, you are usually a thousand or two thousand miles from needing rotors too. Once it grinds, the rotors are already gone. That is how a $200 brake job turns into a $600 one.
We have been doing brakes in Spring Grove since 1960, three generations of the same family on the same street, with a habit of telling drivers the truth about what they need. Our ASE Certified techs work on everything out there, F-150s, Silverados, Camrys, BMWs, Jeeps, and diesel work trucks. We run OE-quality pads and rotors from brands that hold up on McHenry County winter roads. If you want a refresher on why worn brakes matter, the NHTSA vehicle safety pages lay it out plainly.
Every brake repair is backed by our Confidence Plus 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty, and most jobs finish the same day. Call (815) 675-1039, and if something feels wrong, don't drive on it.
Signs Your Brakes Need Service Now
Brake trouble almost always starts small and specific. Here is what to watch for and what each one usually means.
High-Pitched Squeal
The wear tab is rubbing the rotor, which means your pads are down to the minimum. You have some miles left, but not many. Book it now.
Grinding Noise
Metal on metal. The pads are worn through and the backing plate is cutting into the rotor. Stop driving on it. The rotors, and maybe the calipers, are already damaged.
Pedal Pulsation
A shudder through the pedal usually means warped rotors, common on trucks after towing or on any vehicle that has been through a lot of heat cycles.
Soft or Spongy Pedal
The pedal goes lower than usual or feels mushy. That points to air in the lines, contaminated fluid, or a leaking caliper, and it needs a flush or a full system check.
Pulling to One Side
A stuck caliper, uneven pad wear, or a hydraulic imbalance. It also chews through tires, so it needs more than a pad swap.
Brake Warning Light
Low fluid, the parking brake engaged, or an ABS fault. A steady light and a flashing one mean different things. We scan for the exact code.
Burning Smell
Hot brakes after hard stops or a long downhill are usually normal. A burning smell during normal driving is not. That is a stuck caliper or parking brake. Pull over.
Longer Stopping Distance
Something changed. Worn pads, glazed rotors, low fluid, air in the lines, or contaminated fluid. The brakes were fine last month and they are not fine now.

A free brake inspection with every service. Pad thickness, rotor condition, fluid level, caliper slide operation, and line integrity, all checked.
Brake Pad Replacement
OE-quality pads matched to your vehicle, ceramic, semi-metallic, or heavy-duty truck. Caliper slide service and hardware are part of the job.
Rotor Replacement
New OE-spec rotors for cars and heavy-duty trucks. We don't resurface a warped rotor when it needs replacing, and we tell you which it is.

Every Brake Repair. Backed for 3 Years.
Parts and labor covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The same coverage a dealer offers, on an independent shop's bill. If something is not right, we make it right. That has been the deal since 1960.
Honest Inspection, Real Parts, Fast Turnaround
Brakes are one of the most over-sold jobs in this industry. Plenty of shops want to put pads, rotors, and fluid on the ticket every visit whether you need them or not. We do not work that way.
Every brake job here starts with a real inspection, not a pitch. We measure pad thickness, check the rotors, inspect calipers and slide pins, test the fluid for moisture, and look over the lines. Then we show you the numbers and tell you what you need and what can wait. We use OE-quality pads and rotors built for northern Illinois winters, most jobs are done the same day, and all of it is covered by the 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.
Free Inspection
A brake check with every oil change or service visit, no obligation.
OE-Quality Parts
Ceramic, semi-metallic, and HD truck pads from brands we trust.

Brake Repair Questions
How often should I replace my brake pads?
Usually somewhere between 30,000 and 70,000 miles, depending on how you drive, what you drive, and whether your miles are stop-and-go or highway. Crawling along Grand Avenue or Route 31 wears pads a lot faster than a steady commute.
Can I just replace the pads without rotors?
Sometimes. If the rotors are still in spec and not scored or warped, pads alone are fine. We measure every rotor during a brake job and tell you straight whether they need replacing, resurfacing, or can go another round.
How much does brake repair cost?
It depends on the vehicle, the parts, and what the inspection turns up. A front brake job on a daily driver runs noticeably less than the same job on a heavy-duty truck or a performance car. Call (815) 675-1039 for a quote.
Why do my brakes squeak when they aren't worn out?
Usually dust, glazed pads, or hardware issues like loose caliper slide pins. A quick inspection tells us whether it is a maintenance thing or an early warning of wear.
Do you service European brakes with electronic parking brakes?
Yes. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, Volvo, and newer domestic EPB systems. We have the dealer-level tools for EPB service mode and proper resets.
